Enhancing Accessibility and SEO through Quality Content
Understanding the Connection between Accessibility and SEO
In the digital age, creating content that is both accessible and optimized for search engines is crucial. Accessibility ensures that all users, including those with disabilities, can interact with your content. Meanwhile, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) helps your content reach a larger audience by improving its visibility on search engines. These two elements, when combined, not only enhance user experience but also improve your site's ranking. Win-win, right?
Accessibility & SEO emphasize the importance of quality content. Accessible content is often rich, structured, and well-organized, which aligns perfectly with SEO best practices. So, let's talk through how you can enhance both through building higher quality content!
Also, as a note: all of these guidelines work for Word and Google Docs, too, but we'll cover tips for Microsoft office users in another post! Both Word and Google Docs have tools to help with accessibility! Use them!

Key Steps to Creating Accessible & SEO-Friendly Content
Use Clear and Descriptive Headings
Headings are essential for both accessibility and SEO. How do they help accessibility? They help provide the framework for the content that screen readers use! So, they help screen readers navigate content and provide search engines with crucial information about the structure of your page! Use descriptive headings that accurately reflect the content of each section.
- Ensure headings follow a logical order (e.g., H1, H2, H3).
- Incorporate relevant keywords naturally.
- Avoid keyword stuffing (using any word you think), which can harm readability and SEO. Instead, focus on quality.
Requirement: Utilize Alt Text for Images
Alt text provides descriptions for images, making them accessible to users with visual impairments and helping search engines understand the context of the images. Always include concise and relevant alt text for every image. It is also a requirement under ADA -- all images regardless if they are in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, a website -- need alt text. See our posts on alt text for more details and help!

Enhance Readability
Write in Simple and Clear Language
Clear language improves accessibility by making your content understandable to a broader audience, including non-native speakers and those with cognitive disabilities. It also benefits SEO by reducing bounce rates and increasing engagement.
- Avoid jargon and complex sentence structures. (It is OK to use the language that your business audience uses and expects. However, it is always a good practice to spell out acronyms, provide definitions, etc. Don't assume your audience knows).
- Use bullet points or lists to break down complex information.
- Keep paragraphs short and focused.
Accessibility and SEO for the Win!
By prioritizing accessibility and SEO, you not only comply with legal standards but also enhance your site's user experience and search engine ranking. Quality content is the cornerstone of this dual enhancement, serving the needs of all users while appealing to search algorithms.
